New class officers for juniors and seniors got elected for the year of 2024-2025 through campaigning and voting via email.
For the new school year, the president of the Junior Class Board is Mila Hormann and the vice president is TayLana Tolbert. As for the Senior Class Board, the president is Angel Dawson and the vice president is Janessa Mbatia. Each student got elected by their fellow peers through a Google Form that was sent out to each grade.
“I found out I got elected through the intercom on a Friday,” Dawson said. “I was kind of grateful that people really did see my vision and see what I wanted to do with it and they believed in me enough to vote for me. I feel like it’s a little different. It’s not just a popularity contest. I was proud.”
In order to be a part of either of the class boards, students had to fill out an application form and once they were accepted, they could start campaigning. They were allowed to take on the campaigning process however they decided as long as they were not slandering others.
“I designed a poster on Canva, printed it out, hung it across the school, and then I posted on social media and had my friends repost it so more people could see what I was running for,” Hormann said. “It had my face and ‘vote for Mila Hormann for junior class’ on it. Then it had some of my information at the bottom, like email and stuff like that.”
Each board focuses on different tasks and requirements. For the Senior Class Board, they focus on graduation and senior related events.
“The senior class officers are expected to represent our school at events like games and other performances,” Senior Class Board Sponsor Shelby Redding said. “The biggest job they have is around the time of graduation. They have to speak and lead their class at Baccalaureate, Honors Night, and Graduation.”
The Junior Class Board has the responsibility of organizing prom and doing many fundraisers for that event. Some fundraisers can consist of selling t-shirts, sweet treats, etc. They have to pick a theme for prom, find a venue, get decorations, and set up before the actual dance.
“I think some of the themes that we have so far are exciting and I have decorated for homecoming in the past and that’s always fun, trying to plan and organize how we are going to do each part, so I think it’s going to be similar to that,” Hormann said. “I’m very excited about being able to do that.”
The students that got elected to these big roles within their class have many responsibilities. They are supposed to show strong leadership and set a good example for their fellow pupils.
“I decided to join junior class officers because I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to get more involved with my school.” Tolbert said. “I wanted to be able to be a part of the planning of prom, and a part of a lot of fundraisers that go into that, because it’s a special night, it’s really important, and a lot of people care about it.”
The leaders working together on the boards are expected to cooperate with one another and build a friendly atmosphere. The president and vice president for the Senior Class Board, Dawson and Mbatia, already had a strong connection before entering the board together.
“I was not even interested in it in the beginning and then Angel brought it up and was like, ‘you should do it,’ and then she told me all these activities that we can help plan and all the fundraising we do,” Mbatia said. “I was like, ‘that kind of sounds fun.’ So I just put my name up there and campaigned.”
Already having previous experience from being the junior class president last year, Dawson has a passion for being in the student government. She has many ideas that she wants to implement for this school year, wanting to bring back some old traditions and create new ones.
“So there will be a senior brunch,” Dawson said. “Eventually, there’ll be senior sunset, senior cookout and then the senior prank. Senior assassin, I would definitely want to have those this year, especially because last year we didn’t get the opportunity to do so.”
