Senior Carson Rollings leisurely draws on the large piece of paper in front of her, smiling, as she works on her art project and chats with her classmates. Now that spring has sprung, Rolling’s creative juices were flowing as she reached for the art supplies around her.
One of Rollings’ primary hobbies was art— one she’s fostered for a long time now. And with the sun beginning to shine more, flowers beginning to bloom, and birds chirping, Rollings had access to constant inspiration.
“I love taking inspiration from the plants and animals I see outside as well as my pets interacting with nature,” Rollings said. “I also love that I can start doing art outside to enjoy the weather. I plan on spending a lot of my time outside while also drawing and painting what I see in my backyard.”
During the months March, April, and May, many new activities become doable since it gets warmer, not just artsy crafts. Primarily, outdoor hobbies such as going on walks, picnics, gardening, and certain sports can be popular go-to’s.
“I’m really excited to start going white water rafting in Colorado and to maybe do more outside activities that just aren’t fun in the cold,” senior Amaya Deblanche said.
Despite this, there are still many indoor physical activities to do during the springtime. For example, the Bellevue Public Schools Lied Activity Center allows the community to take part in recreational hobbies year round. For springtime specifically, they are currently offering programs for younger children.
“We had an indoor soccer league for Pk-2nd grade,” BPS Lied Activity Center Recreation Specialist Ryan Schultz said. “We also have a PK-2nd grade basketball league going on currently. Our busiest time is the winter months because everyone is looking for indoor activities. Once spring and summer come along, more people tend to go outside for sports.”
For the older demographic however, there are alternative hobbies to try at the LAC. Schultz, for instance, recommended the gymnasium for individuals wanting to be active and try new things during the spring.
“Our weight room upstairs is a great gym for beginners,” Schultz said. “It has all of the necessary equipment without the big gym atmosphere. Students can get a membership for $20 a year which gives them access to the basketball courts, walking track, weight room and activity room.”
Another popular pastime during the spring is traveling. Spring and summer breaks in particular, often give people the opportunity to visit new places and make memories.
“[My] cruise in spring is just a fun five day thing me and my mom have planned,” Deblanche said. “It goes from Florida to the Bahamas. I’m really excited because the other cruise I’ve been on was to Cancun.”
