Senior Adrian Davis and senior Mya Weber are Bellevue East High School’s 12 star athletes for the 2024-2025 school year.
”12 Sport Athlete Recognition is reserved for those graduating seniors who have competed in 12 seasons, Fall, Winter and Spring, over their high school careers,” Athletic Secretary Jamie Arriola said, “To do this, we recognize the enormous amount of commitment, dedication, and work ethic that each of these young adults have shown in the last four years. The coaches of these [two] student-athletes have come to rely upon their leadership, outstanding performances, and positive attitude. They are a great example of what a Bellevue East Chieftain student-athlete should strive for.”
A common misconception about playing multiple sports is the idea that it is bad for an athlete. Yet sources like Stanford medicine and Player Development Project argue it is beneficial. With ranging skills and staying in shape all being factors in this assessment which Arriloa also talks about. Most importantly for high schoolers it opens up more opportunities to them.
“Playing sports has impacted my life by spending so many hours at them, but it’s helping me pay for college in the long run,“ Webber said.
According to Player Development Project and Sutter Health one of the biggest benefits
to do sports is the confidence athletes gain confidence and the attitudes in which they gain. This is shown in both student athletes.
“My biggest advice is to have confidence in everything that you do. Even if it is something brand new, have the confidence that you are skilled and smart enough to figure anything out and master whatever it is you want to accomplish,” Head Coach Eric Lener said.
According to MU Health Care and Sutter Health one of the benefits to doing sports is the team and socializing that comes with it. Learning how to work as a team is one of the biggest components to sports that are beneficial to children.
“You get a real sense of family and learn about people in different ways especially with all the different sports,” Davis said.
According to Project Play and Sutter Health sports also help mental health and being happy. Teaching early skills in all kinds of mental and emotional developmental skills.
“Mya Webber is the light in the room that everyone needs. She will always crack a joke when you’re at your lowest to help cheer you up. Her spark of energy is always the highlight of the game! Keep doing amazing things, you will go far,” sophomore Willow Gulley said.
