It is a new year, which means there is a lot to look forward to, especially when it comes to 2025’s upcoming movies, many of which are sequels to fan favorites, a new twist on a classic, or an exciting new story for audiences to experience.
“Movies are, I think, getting back on what they were doing before,” senior Brandon Green said.
From January to April, there will be some notable releases. These include “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Dogman,” “Snow White,” “A Minecraft Movie” and “Mickey 17.”
“‘Mickey 17’, it should be coming out shortly, it’s directed by the same director as Parasite and it’s kind of a sci-fi movie with Robert Pattinson,” instructor Robert Carraher said.
Each year there are “summer blockbusters” which are movies that are widely popular. According to Ben Sherlock, in his article “10 Biggest Movies Coming Out In Summer 2025”, the summer blockbuster season typically starts in May and runs until September. Movies set to come out during this time in 2025 include “Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning”, “Lilo and Stitch”, “How to Train Your Dragon”, “Jurassic World: Rebirth”, and “Superman”.
“I think the Superman movie comes out this year,” Carraher said. “I’m looking forward to that, I think it comes out this summer.”
The upcoming DC movie, according to IMDb, follows the classic story of Superman in a new time period. The movie will be directed by James Gunn, also known for writing the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies.
“I am really looking forward to the new DC world they are building under James Gunn,” Carraher said. “I am so much more of a DC person than a Marvel person and I am really looking forward to that.”
Another movie coming out this summer is “How to Train Your Dragon”, originally released in 2010. Fifteen years later, “How to Train Your Dragon” will return to theaters as a live action remake.
“I am so excited about the live action ‘How to Train Your Dragon’,” junior Makaela Davis said.
Live action remakes can be a topic for debate between movie lovers. Some people like Davis don’t typically like live action remakes because they don’t live up to the original. Other people, like Green, think that it depends on the individual movie.
“It’s tricky with live action remakes because sometimes it can work really well and regenerate the audience,” Green said.
Another upcoming movie is “Wicked: For Good”, the second part to the story of “Wicked”. It will bring back stars like Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
“I am looking forward to the second Wicked,” Carraher said.
This fall will see many sequels such as “Wicked: For Good”, “Zootopia 2”, “Avatar: Fire and Ash”, “Tron: Ares”, and “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2”. Some people like sequels, don’t like sequels, or feel in between.
“I love a really original story and it makes me sad that the biggest movies every year are almost entirely part of some already developed idea like the Marvel world, sequels, or remakes, and there are very few original ideas that are super popular with the public,” Carraher said.
