Patiently sitting in the kitchen, sophomore Sylvia Williamson waits for her favorite fall recipe to finish baking, overnight buns. The warm smells in the air not only remind her of the delicious taste of this item, but also reminds her of family.
During the fall season, Williamson likes to bake buns that take her about 10 hours to complete. This recipe is very popular in the Williamson family, earning its place as a household favorite among them.
“My mom got a recipe book from my great grandma, and she got it from other members in our family, and then she just passed it down to my mom because my mom’s the one who bakes the most in our family,” Williamson said.
Starting at about 6 in the morning gives Williamson the whole day to finish making the buns. The buns consist of the main ingredients of a bread recipe.
“It takes a lot of kneading,” Williamson said. “Like, you have to let it rise. You have to knead it back down. Has to rise again. Knead it back down. Then you have to roll it into little balls. Then you have to let those rise, and then you have to bake them for half an hour.”
She has had this recipe in her family for all of her life and has created great memories with it. The deeper meaning of the recipe along with the taste of it provides Williamson with a sense of coziness.
“The buns, they’re good with everything, they’re very versatile, I’ll have them for breakfast and I’ll have them with stew,” Williamson said. “I’ll make little sandwiches and sliders out of them.”
