Taylor Swift has been known to be one of the biggest pop stars in music today, but for some people, like me, I think she is overrated. Taylor Swift is overrated because her music is not unique and what is she doing with this overwhelming fame that she has?
To begin with, her music is not unique. lyrically they are different, but out of all of her 274 songs just displays similar themes and subjects. Subjects like heartbreak, love, and revenge are often recurring in her music. While this may be good to listen to when you are in your bed, eating ice cream, and your boyfriend just broke up with you, unless you run through a lot of boyfriend it is a vibe killer. Even when she tried spicing things up by adding rapper Ice Spice into her music she still displayed themes with topics including revenge and heartbreak. I am not saying that it is necessarily a bad thing, but it is not something that you want to listen to often. Swift’s songs are way too repetitive.
According to Ranker, a website that goes far beyond Top 10 lists with deep rankings about everything, voted on by everyone, over 6,000 people voted Swift as the third most popular artist. Over 2,000 people disagree with this status and think she should be ranked lower. Those 2,000 people understand the fact that being ranked that high requires a level of creativity, which Swift lacks in. Are her concert outfits creative, sure, but her music is not. A music artist that is good at expressing a level of creativity is SZA. SZA differentiates between rap and singing and she is good at it. This creativity makes her music likable to different audiences. I am not saying that she is necessarily better than Swift. After all, Swift has been in this industry longer and somewhat earned her popularity. As of November 12, 2024, Swift is number 4 on Billboard charts. There is no denying that Taylor Swift is good at what she does, she is a very talented artist and some of her music is good. According to a survey sent to Bellevue East Students, out of 189 people, 76.7% of students said that Taylor Swift is overrated. Seven other responses included alternative ways of saying no. All I have to say is our school has spoken.
Additionally, what is she doing with her fame? Swift’s lifestyle is actively bad for the environment. Let’s be real, why are you taking private jets everywhere? 100+ flights, come on, we already know the world has a huge enough environmental crisis as it is. Let’s stop and reflect, all of these private jet flights have an excessive amount of carbon dioxide released into the ozone. According to Simple Flying, Swift’s private jet usage released 1,125 tons of carbon dioxide into the environment in 2022 alone. Can we all agree that we want to stop global warming? If that is a yes, Swift needs to start taking cars. If she wants to be fancy then she can use an electric vehicle.
Overall, I do not have much to say on the topic of Swift being overrated. I think everyone has their opinion on her, but I personally I believe she is overhyped. There are other artists that show a level of creativity which she does not have. Additionally, Swift is actively harming the environment, so how can she be so highly rated when she’s not even helping our environment?
